Canada Bread: Local, yet global

Although fresh bakery is essentially a local business with plants that serve a limited geographical area, competition within the industry has gone global. That said, Canada Bread’s Hamilton, ON, plant will supply Ontario exclusively. “We don’t expect to service new geography,” said Michael McCain, president and CEO, Maple Leaf Foods, and chairman, Canada Bread Co., Toronto, ON, “but we do expect to service growth in new product segments.
“Our goal at Maple Leaf Foods is to establish globally competitive, highly efficient scale plants that produce great-tasting products for our customers and our consumers,” he added.
Mr. McCain positioned Canada Bread in the wider world of the baking industry, saying: “Being cost-competitive is always important. The food industry is competitive globally. It has been for many, many years, and we expect it will continue to be for many more years.”
