FDA to study whole-grain labeling

Wanting to know how consumers interpret whole grain labeling, the Food and Drug Administration plans to study awareness of terms such as “made with whole grain,” “whole wheat” and “100% whole wheat.” The proposed study, described in the Federal Register of Feb. 27, will examine the credibility of whole grain statements, how they affect consumers’ use of the Nutrition Facts panel and whether such terms confer a halo effect for the food so labeled.
