WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.9 billion lbs in July, up 0.1% from the same month of 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest

Milk Production report.

In July, production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,769 lbs, which was 25 lbs above July 2008. Additionally, there were 8.4 million dairy cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 34,000 less than in June 2009 and 115,000 less than in July 2008.
Milk production for June was revised to 14.8 billion lbs, up 34 million lbs from last month’s preliminary estimate and up 0.1% from June 2008.
