OAK BROOK, ILL. — McDonald’s Corp. said global comparable sales rose 5.1% in May, including a gain of 2.8% in the United States. Year-to-date, global sales were up 5%, which compared with 7% growth in the same period of 2008.
"May’s strong performance tells us that customers around the world continue to choose McDonald’s for the convenience, menu choice, quality and value we offer," said Jim Skinner, chief executive officer. "Our focus on the customer and alignment around the ‘Plan to Win’ are driving our ongoing success."
McDonald’s attributed the gain in U.S. operations in part to the national introduction of McCafe espresso-based coffees.
European comparable sales for May rose 7.6% from a year ago, while sales in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa climbed 6.4% behind a focus on relevant menu offerings and convenience.
