Barilla evaluating offers for Kamps Bakeries
MILAN — Barilla Holdings S.p.A. is evaluating offers for its retail baking business, Kamps GmbH, according to Bloomberg News. Guido Barilla, chairman of Barilla, told Bloomberg, “It isn’t a strategic business. It is worth a lot, and we aren’t’ interested in giving it away.” Barilla sought to sell Kamps, which operates 900 bakery shops, a year ago but was not successful. Barilla acquired Kamps and Lieken, a major German baking company, in 2002 for $2.3 billion. Commenting on U.S. results for Barilla in 2009, the company said volume was up 6% and sales were up 12%. The company said its share of the U.S. market rose in 2009 to 28%, up one percentage point.
