Canola protein products gain self-affirmed GRAS status

Two specialty canola protein products, Isolexx and Vitalexx, have achieved self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status for use in various foods and beverages, according to Bio-Extraction Inc., Toronto. Sales of the products in the United States should begin in the first quarter of 2010.

Keller and Heckman L.L.P., Washington, completed the GRAS review of the Brassica juncea variety of canola. Bio-Extraction also may pursue self-affirmed GRAS status for another canola variety, Brassica napus.

Isolexx, a canola protein isolate, has been shown to work in baked foods such as bread, rolls, cakes, cake mixtures, cookies, biscuits, crackers, pancakes, sweet pastry, snacks, donuts and pasta. Other applications include vegetarian food products, meat analogues, nutritional products and protein bars.

Vitalexx, a hydrolyzed canola protein extract, has been shown to work in nutritional beverages, nutritional products and protein bars.
