White bread price down, whole wheat soars

WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread fell in November while whole wheat bread posted its largest month-over-month increase since November 2006, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 137.5c, down 3.2c per lb from October but up 0.2c from November 2009. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 1.6c in the South and up 1.2c in the West — and fell in one region — down 10.4c in the West. For the second consecutive month, the B.L.S. did not report an average price for the Northeast.

At 188.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 14.1c per lb from October and up 7.5c per lb from November 2009. The 188.4c per lb price was the highest recorded by the B.L.S. since October 2009.

The national average price of family flour in November was 44.6c per lb, down 2.6c from October and down 1.2c from November 2009. The national average family flour price has now declined in three consecutive months.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in November was 114.1c per lb, down 1.2c from October and down 5.2c from November 2009. Chocolate chip cookies were 334.7c per lb, up 1164c from October and up 18c from November 2009.
