October nonfat dry milk output down 12% from year ago

WASHINGTON — October production of edible nonfat dry milk was 100,703,000 lbs, down 3% from September and down 12% from October 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 143,631,000 lbs on Oct. 31, down 5% from September but up 17% from a year ago. October nonfat dry milk shipments were 105,710,000 lbs, down 9% from September and down 18% from 2010.

Output of skim milk powders was 41,985,000 lbs, up 18% from September and up 140% from a year earlier. Total dry whey production was 76,476,000 lbs, up slightly from 76,265,000 lbs in September but down 2% from October 2010. Production of lactose was 82,091,000 lbs, down 1% from September but up 9% from October 2010. Whey protein concentrate production totaled 36,841,000 lbs, up 4% from both September 2011 and October 2010. Dry buttermilk outturn was 7,608,000 lbs, up 4% from September and up 26% from a year earlier.

Total manufacturers stocks of dry whey on Oct. 31, 2011, were 42,007,000 lbs, down 3% from September 2011 and October 2010. Total lactose stocks were 69,860,000 lbs, up 2% from September but down 15% from October 2010. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 38,154,000 lbs, up slightly from 38,080,000 lbs in September and up 22% from October 2010. Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 12,064,000 lbs, down 6% from September but up 22% from October 2010.

Butter production in October 2011 was 146,097,000 lbs, up 6% from September and up 20% from October 2010.

Total cheese production in September was 896,081,000 lbs, up 3% from September and up 2% from October 2010.

Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 60,457,000 gallons, down 13% from September but up 2% from October 2010. Low-fat ice cream production was 30,221,000 gallons, down 11% from September but up 11% from October 2010.
