ANN ARBOR, MICH. — NSF International and the American Society for Nutrition (A.S.N.) announced they will work together to administer the Smart Choices Program, a nutrition labeling program initiated under the leadership of The Keystone Center, a non-profit organization that helps create consensus solutions to public health programs.

The front-of-package labeling program will feature a symbol that identifies more nutritious choices within 19 specific product categories and provides calorie information that identifies calories per serving and servings per container on the front of the package. Products featuring the labeling are set to roll out this summer.

In looking to bring consistency and clarity to the U.S. marketplace, the A.S.N. and NSF International will act as program administrators providing both scientific and technical expertise to a board of directors comprised of non-profit, scientific and industry representatives.

"NSF International’s core business is certifying products and writing standards for food, water and consumer goods in order to protect public health," said Nancy Culotta, vice-president at NSF. "This labeling program will assist consumers in choosing nourishing foods and beverages that fit within their daily caloric needs. We look forward to working with A.S.N. to administer the program and ultimately help educate consumers on nutritional labeling."

Jim Hill, president of the A.S.N., said his group looks forward to partnering with NSF in a venture that is based on "sound, consensus science."

"As the preeminent professional society for nutrition science, A.S.N. looks forward to working with this exciting new program that will aid consumers in making healthier food selections when they shop," Mr. Hill said.

Companies who already have signed up to participate in the program include ConAgra Foods, Inc.; General Mills, Inc.; Kellogg Co.; Kraft Foods Inc.; PepsiCo, Inc.; SunMaid; and Unilever.
