PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Net income of J&J Snack Foods Corp. in the first quarter ended Dec. 26, 2009, totaled $7,091,000, equal to 38c per share on the common stock, up 64% from $4,319,000, or 23c per share, in the same period a year ago. Sales in the quarter were $149,102,000, up 6% from $141,142,000 a year ago. Sales to food service customers increased $3,726,000, or 4%, in the first quarter, to $101,261,000. Driving more than 80% of that increase were sales of funnel cake fries to Burger King. Soft pretzel sales to the food service segment increased less than 1% to $24,331,000. Bakery product sales, excluding biscuit and dumpling sales and fruit and fig bars, increased $1,162,000, or 3%, driven by higher sales to private label customers. Biscuit and dumpling sales fell less than 1% to $9,659,000, while sales of fruit and fig bars virtually were unchanged at $7,801,000. Frozen beverage and related product sales increased 5% to $34,899,000, with beverage sales accounting for $22,432,000 of that total.
