NEW ORLEANS — Turnbull Bakeries, a New Orleans baker of melba toast, has been reopened after a one-year shutdown. The business was closed following the death in June 2010 of 89-year-old Elizabeth Turnbull, who led the company for many years. Her son Wayne Turnbull assumed control of the company and decided to reopen the business. According to Greater New Orleans Inc., the business will create 30 new jobs with an annual payroll of $1 million. The company will sell baked foods under the Turnbull brand as well as private label. “It was important to continue the Turnbull tradition in New Orleans,” Mr. Turnbull said. “My family has invested over $4 million to ensure the company’s success in this great city, and I am excited that my daughters want to continue the tradition of hard work and success that their grandparents began.” John Riddell has been named chief operating officer of the company.
