DECATUR, ILL. — Archer Daniels Midland Co. said it now plans to eliminate 1,200 positions globally, up from the 1,000 job cuts that originally were announced in January. In reaching the new figure, the company said it will eliminate 175 jobs in Decatur. An additional 160 employees in Decatur have accepted ADM’s voluntary early retirement offer, the company said.

Earlier this year, ADM announced plans to cut its total workforce by about 3%.

“In January ADM announced that we would streamline our organization to improve productivity and better match our cost structure to our business and our growth,” said David Weintraub, a spokesman for ADM. “As part of these efforts, we offered a voluntary early retirement incentive in the U.S., and began work to redesign processes, flatten our organizational structure, and prioritize and consolidate work.

“With this work completed, we are beginning our workforce reduction, meeting this week with colleagues whose positions have been eliminated. We would like to emphasize that the decision to reduce our workforce does not reflect on the dedication of colleagues who have made valuable contributions to ADM.”
