CLAYTON, N.C. — Turkington USA, a maker of custom-built commercial bakery equipment, including ovens, mixers and coolers, is closing its U.S. headquarters in Clayton, a move that will affect 101 employees, according to the Clayton News-Star.

According to the Clayton News-Star, Turkington filed a notice Feb. 13 with the North Carolina Department of Commerce under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act indicating it has appointed a temporary receiver to either wind down or sell the business.

Turkington moved to the Clayton facility from Goldsboro, N.C., in the fall of 2009. The facility was designed with an open work area to support collaboration, communication and teamwork, according to the company. Skylights were added to supplement lighting and reduce energy use. Other environmentally friendly decisions included the use of remanufactured furniture and efficient lighting and ventilation, as well as improvements to the recycling programs, painting processes and waste storage and handling. The changes allowed Turkington to operate below the thresholds for exemptions from storm water and hazardous waste permitting.
