WASHINGTON — Backed by daytime television host, author and child nutrition advocate Rachael Ray, Representative George Miller of California has introduced the House version of the child nutrition reauthorization bill. The bill would boost child nutrition programs by $8 billion over 10 years, nearly double the $4.5 billion increase proposed in the Senate bill. In a June 10 press conference with Mr. Miller, Ms. Ray said, “Today will mark the first day that we will end hunger for our kids and improve nutrition.” Responding to the proposal, the Grocery Manufacturers Association applauded the increased access to school meals program contained in the bill. The G.M.A. said Congress should give the U.S. Department of Agriculture “clear authority to set science-based standards for foods sold in schools during the school day.” “We believe that the school cafeteria line can be on the front lines of feeding children while ending childhood obesity within a generation,” said Pamela G. Bailey, chief executive officer of the G.M.A.
