WASHINGTON — Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will meet with representatives of the baking industry as part of the American Bakers Association board of directors meeting June 9.

“We are extremely pleased to have Secretary Vilsack joining the A.B.A. board of directors to discuss a number of pressing issues for bakers, including commodity volatility, nutrition issues and food safety compliance,” said Robb MacKie, A.B.A. president and chief executive officer. “I anticipate a productive working session that will allow for a frank and open dialogue on these and other important issues.”

Mr. Vilsack was named to his current position by President Obama in January 2009. Previously, he served two terms as governor of Iowa.

The A.B.A. said critical issues for baking under the U.S.D.A.’s purview include commodities, sugar supply management, biotechnology and ethanol initiatives, school meal programs, front-of-package labeling, the Agriculture Research Service, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid.

“With food inflation due to commodity volatility threatening to exceed 2008 levels, it is my hope that this exchange will lead to results that help bakers and ultimately consumers,” Mr. MacKie said.
