The Food and Drug Administration on May 27 issued a final rule that authorizes the inclusion of the noncariogenic sweetener isomaltulose in a health claim concerning the relationship between noncariogenic carbohydrates and dental caries. The F.D.A. concluded isomaltulose does not promote dental caries.

Cargill submitted a petition for the health claim on Aug. 31, 2006. The F.D.A. issued an interim final rule on Sept. 17, 2007.
