COLUMBIA, MD. — DSM Nutritional Products has formed a Nutritional Lipids unit in Columbia. It combines omega-3 fatty acid products and omega-6 fatty acid products from recently acquired Martek Biosciences Corp. and polyunsaturated fatty acids from DSM Nutritional Products, Basel, Switzerland.

Nutritional Lipids will focus on developing and positioning nutritional lipids products. The business will leverage Martek’s technology and market position in the United States and DSM Nutritional Products’ global asset footprint, marketing and sales, and premix network.

Royal DSM n.v. completed its acquisition of Martek Biosciences in February. The Martek omega-3 fatty acid products are in the form of algal docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the omega-6 fatty acid products are in the form of arachidonic acid (ARA).

Peter A. Nitze, who was Martek’s chief operating officer at the time of the acquisition, will become president of Nutritional Lipids, and he will be based in Columbia. David Abramson, Martek’s president at the time of the acquisition, has been appointed senior executive adviser for DSM Nutritional Products. Steve Dubin, Martek’s chief executive officer at the time of the acquisition, will assume a new role at DSM that will be announced at a later date.
