WASHINGTON — A month after both categories suffered declines, the average price paid for white pan bread again fell while the price of whole wheat bread rose, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 134c, its lowest level since February 2008, according to the B.L.S. The September price for white pan bread decreased 3.5c compared with August and was down 3.9c from September 2008. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in one region — up 3.8c in the West — and fell in three, easing 13.5c in the Northeast, 4.4c in the Midwest and 1.4c in the South.

At 186.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 3.1c per lb from August but down 8.5c per lb from September 2008.

The national average price of family flour in September was 51c per lb, down 0.7c from August and down 2.2c from September 2008.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in September was 114.1c per lb, down 8.5c from August and down 0.6c from September 2008. Chocolate chip cookies were 309.2c per lb, down 14.3c from August but up 14.2c from September 2008.
