Combining the prebiotic Beneo Synergy 1, an oligofructose-enriched inulin, with the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 (BB12) favorably altered through symbiotic intervention several colorectal cancer biomarkers, according to the results of a study that appeared in the February issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 37 colon cancer patients and 43 polypectomized patients. Synbiotic intervention resulted in significant changes in fecal flora as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus increased while Clostridium perfringens decreased. Orafti, Active Food Ingredients, Malvern, Pa., offers Beneo Synergy 1.
