WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 15.2 billion lbs in October, up 2.5% from October 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for September was revised to 14.8 billion lbs, up 1.9% from September 2010 and a decrease of 10 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,787 lbs in October, up 20 lbs from October 2010. There were 8.48 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 111,000 head more than in October 2010 and 10,000 head more than in September 2011.
