WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread fell in October, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 145.7c, down 2c per lb from September but up 5c from October 2010. The gain followed an increase of 0.3c per lb in September. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in October fell in two regions — down 3.4c in the South and 3.2c in the Midwest — and rose in one region — up 4.9c in the West.

At 204.1c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 3.2c per lb from September but up 29.8c per lb from October 2010. While down from the record high of 207.3c per lb set in September, it still was the second highest average price on record.

The national average price of family flour in October was 54.2c per lb, down 0.8c from September but up 7c from October 2010. The price was up in all three regions — up 0.5c in the South, up 0.4c in the West and up 0.2c in the Midwest. The B.L.S. also provided its first average price for the Northeast, 56.9c, since April 2011.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 127.9c per lb, up 0.9c from September and up 12.6c from October 2010. Chocolate chip cookies were 356.9c per lb, up 22c from September and up 33.8c from October 2010. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 76.7c per lb, up 4.8c from September and up 5.3c from October 2010.
