WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in August was $7.56 per bu, up 46c from $7.10 in July and up $2.12 from $5.44 in August 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultural Prices report.

The average price paid for winter wheat in August was $7.26 a bu, up 49c from $6.77 in July and up $1.79 from $5.47 in August 2010. The average price paid for durum was $11 per bu, up 80c from $10.20 in July and up $6.55 from $4.45 in August 2010. Spring wheat other than durum averaged $8.02 per bu, down 39c from $8.41 in July but up $2.55 from $5.47 in August 2010.

The average price paid for rough rice in August was $13.20 a cwt, up 50c from $12.70 in July and up $1.60 from $11.60 a year ago.

The August index of prices received by farmers for food grains was 247 compared with the 1990-92 base of 100, up 5% from 235 the previous month and up 36% from 181 in August 2010.

The August index of feed grains was 274, up 5% from 262 the previous month and up 75% from 157 in August 2010. The average price paid to farmers for corn was $6.62 a bu, up 30c from $6.32 in July and up $2.97 from $3.65 in August 2010. Farmers received an average of $12.30 a cwt for grain sorghum in August, up $1.90 from $10.40 in July and up $5.94 from $6.36 in August 2010. The average price paid for oats in August was $3.33 a bu, down 2c from $3.35 in July but up $1.24 from $2.09 in August 2010.

The index of August prices received for oilseeds was 231, down 3% from 237 in July but up 30% from 178 in August 2010. Farmers received an average of $12.90 a bu for soybeans in August, down 30c from $13.20 in July but up $2.80 from $10.10 in August 2010.

The August index for dairy products was 168, unchanged from July but up 31% from 128 in August 2010. The average price for all milk in August was $22 a cwt, down 60c from $22.60 in July but up $5.30 from $16.70 in August.

The August poultry and egg index was 160, up 7% from 150 in July and up 6% from 151 in August 2010. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs in August was $1.18 a dozen, up 13c from $1.05 in July and up 36c from 82c in August 2010.
