David Acheson to present to A.B.A., A.T.B.I.

WASHINGTON — David Acheson, managing director of food and import safety practice at Leavitt Partners, is scheduled to speak at the joint American Bakers Association and Allied Trades of the Baking Industry board of directors meeting on June 7 in Washington.

The joint board meeting between the groups will be held June 6-7 and will deal with a range of issues facing the baking industry.

“The Food Safety Modernization Act established sweeping reforms to federal food safety laws,” said Robb MacKie, president and chief executive officer of the A.B.A. “Dr. Acheson is an expert in this area and has worked with the baking industry before. His perspective on the F.S.M.A. requirements and practical implications of the recent Food and Drug Administration’s preventative controls proposal will lend additional insight to the baking industry.”

Prior to joining Leavitt Partners, Dr. Acheson was the chief medical officer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service and then in 2002 joined the F.D.A. as the chief medical officer at the F.D.A. Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. After serving as the director of C.F.S.A.N.’s Office of Food Defense, Communication and Emergency Response, he was named assistant and then associate commissioner for foods, which provided him an agency-wide leadership role for all food and feed issues and the responsibility for the development of the 2007 Food Protection Plan, which served as the basis for many of the authorities granted to the F.D.A. by the F.S.M.A.
