B.B.U. to shutter Iowa bakery

HORSHAM, PA. — Bimbo Bakeries USA will cease operations at its bakery located in Sioux City, Iowa, by March 28. The bakery, which produces bread and currently employs 64, will shift production to other B.B.U. bakeries in the company’s manufacturing network.
The move continues the trend of consolidation at B.B.U., which over the past year has ceased operations at bakeries in Nashville, Tenn.; Easton, Pa.; and Elk Grove, Calif. Operations also are expected to halt at a Wichita, Kas., plant later this month.
“This decision was made after an extensive assessment concluded the aging facility could not compete in the marketplace and is not conducive to B.B.U.’s overall strategy for growth,” said Didier Moleres, regional vice-president of operations for B.B.U.’s Central region. “This decision was, however, difficult because of the great team of associates at the Sioux City bakery.”
The changes are not expected to affect B.B.U.’s customer service or the availability of its fresh-baked products, which will continue to be distributed across the state.
The company acquired the plant as part of its acquisition of the North American Fresh Bakery business of Sara Lee Corp. that closed in November 2011. The plant makes bread under the Old Home, Pillsbury, Master, Healthy Choice, D’Italiano and Roman Meal brands, according to the 2013 Directory & Buyers Guide
