LIVONIA, MICH. — Just Baked, a cupcake and bakery company with 17 locations throughout Southeastern Michigan, has decided to close all of its corporately run locations — 7 in Michigan and 3 in Ohio. The company said it will keep 4 Michigan franchise locations open (Southgate, Canton, Southfield and Ann Arbor).

Founded in 2008 by Pam Turkin, Just Baked makes cupcakes daily, including such varieties as Chubby Hubby (a yellow cake stuffed with fudge icing, topped with peanut butter buttercream, and rolled in chocolate covered pretzels) and Fat Elvis (banana cake topped with peanut butter buttercream pillows, hand dipped in homemade ganache and sprinkled with peanuts).

“Over the past 6 years, we’ve enjoyed taking part in many celebrations and events throughout Metro Detroit,” the company noted in a Facebook posting on Jan. 5. “Today, we’ve decided to reevaluate our business operations and how best to move forward as a company. Effective tomorrow, we will be closing our corporate stores, while our franchise locations will remain open in Southgate, Canton, Southfield and Ann Arbor to service our current customers.

“Once we have the right recipe for the future growth of our business, we hope to continue sharing in your celebrations.”

Just Baked is the latest cupcake chain to reevaluate its operations. Last year, Crumbs Bake Shop, a New York-based cupcake specialty store chain, said it would undergo a brand restructuring. The company is expanding beyond its old niche as a cupcake store to a confectionery and baked goods outlet with a wide variety of products.
