SkinnyPop acquires tortilla chip brand

Austin-based Paqui's tortilla chips are available in sea salt, ranch, roasted jalapeño, grilled habanero, sour cream and salsa verde, and ghost pepper flavors.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — SkinnyPop Popcorn LLC is bulking up its portfolio of better-for-you snacks with the acquisition of the Paqui brand of tortilla chips and tortillas. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Made by stone grinding non-bioengineered corn, Austin-based Paqui’s tortillas are available in buttermilk, roasted jalapeño, cilantro, and pumpkin and spice flavors. Tortilla chip varieties include sea salt, ranch, roasted jalapeño, grilled habanero, sour cream and salsa verde, and ghost pepper. Products are Non-GMO Project Verified and sold regionally in Kroger and Whole Foods Market stores.

“At Paqui, we have always been committed to making tortilla chips and tortillas that not only taste great, but that are better for you as well,” said Doug Lyon, founder of Paqui. “Tom (Ennis, president and chief executive officer of SkinnyPop) and his team at SkinnyPop have the same mission, and we are excited to join this family of better-for-you snack food brands.”

Mr. Lyon joins SkinnyPop as vice-president of creative and innovation, effective immediately.

Founded in 2010, SkinnyPop manufactures and markets Non-GMO Project Verified ready-to-eat popcorn in original, black pepper, white cheddar and sweet varieties. Products contain 39 to 46 calories per cup and are free from preservatives, dairy, gluten and cholesterol.
