NEW YORK —  Barilla S.p.A., a 137-year-old family-owned pasta company, has opened Academia Barilla Restaurants in New York, the first in a chain of Barilla-branded restaurants expected to open in the United States.

The restaurant, which opened in mid-December, features pasta, pizzas, Panini sandwiches, salads, soups and coffees. In addition to in-house dining, the restaurant offers a to-go menu and catering options.

Barilla, based in Parma, Italy, first announced its plans to open a restaurant chain in 2012, when Guido Barilla, chairman of Barilla, told The Wall Street Journal that “There is undoubtedly potential for expansion in the U.S.”
