MOSCOW — Gruma S.A.B. de C.V. has unveiled plans to invest $50 million over the next two years in a new plant in Moscow that will produce wheat tortilla wraps, tortillas and tortilla chips. The new plant, located in an industrial park in the city of Stupino Quadrat, will have the capacity to make 31,500 tons of product per year and will employ 250 people, Gruma said.

Gruma began operations in Russia in 2011 with the purchase of Soltntse Mexico, a local company that produces and markets wheat tortillas, corn tortillas, tortilla chips, sauces and other products of Mexican origin. The new plant will double Gruma’s production capacity in Russia, the company said.

Juan Gonzalez Moreno, president and chief executive officer of Gruma, said sales in the Russian market have been growing at a 15% annual rate, due in large part to the acceptance of Gruma’s products in supermarkets and food service.

In addition to Russia, Gruma operates several other plants in Europe, including two in the United Kingdom and one each in Holland, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine.
