KANSAS CITY — Grain-based foods are a staple in the American diet, but funky twists on some classic snacks are trending to meet consumer demands.

J.M. Smucker Co., Orrville, Ohio, has announced a licensing relationship with Girl Scouts of the USA to bring consumers a mash-up of Girl Scout flavors with cupcakes and brownie to its Pillsbury brand. Similarly, the Kellogg Co.’s Pop-Tarts are using iconic soda-pop flavors to inspire new varieties of toaster pastries.

New cereals and bars are ubiquitous, with General Mills, Inc. launching its first cereal in more than 15 years, McCann’s Irish Oatmeal adding three new varieties to its lineup, and Achieve Superfoods launching an amaranth based bar — the first of its kind in the United States.
