Sukh Bassi joins Manildra in R.&D. role

SHAWNEE MISSION, KAS. — Sukh Bassi, Ph.D., has been named to the position of vice-president of technology development and scientific affairs at the Manildra Group. In his new position, Dr. Bassi will be responsible for overseeing various research and development projects, collaborating with industry and academic partners internationally, and representing the company in its relationships with industry organizations and governmental agencies.

Previously, Dr. Bassi worked for MGP Ingredients, Inc. for the last 32 years where he directed research and development projects, most recently as vice-president for scientific affairs and chief science officer. His latest research was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Small Business Administration and the Kansas Alliance for Bio-energy and Bio-refinery. With the support and cooperation of various institutions, he formed a bio-polymer consortium through which he directed and coordinated the research on adding value to distillers feed for applications in bio-based bio-degradable products.

“His knowledge and experience will be a welcomed asset to both present and future company endeavors,” said Neal Bassi, president. Neal is Sukh’s son.

John Honan, managing director, added, “His vast research in new product development in addition to his familiarity with multiple industries, governmental partners and scientific organizations will make him a versatile and valued contributor.”

Dr. Bassi holds 32 patents and various publications. He belongs to the American Baker’s Association, the International Wheat Gluten Association, the New York Academy of Science, the American Association of Cereal Chemists, and the Institute of Food Technologists. For the past 12 years he has been a non-governmental adviser on the Codex Committee.

“I look forward to working with the Manildra Group because they have an aggressive and innovative research and development program,” Dr. Bassi said. “In my new role I will have the opportunity to do what I enjoy most; invent new innovative technologies and products.”

Established in 1952, the Manildra Group of companies has grown from a single flour mill to one of the world’s largest processors of wheat for the production of vital wheat gluten, specialty wheat proteins, modified wheat starches and wheat flour derivatives. The Manildra Group operates plants both in Australia and the United States.
