WASHINGTON — Total 2013-14 U.S. wheat production was down 6.8% from 2012-13 and harvested acreage at 45.73 million acres was down 6.6% from 2012-13, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its most recent Wheat Data report.

Yield per acre in 2013-14 was one tenth of a percentage point lower than the previous year, 46.2 bus per acre compared with 46.3 bus per acre in 2012-13, the U.S.D.A. said.

Of the five main varieties of wheat, only soft red winter wheat posted an increase in harvested acreage and production in 2013-14 compared with 2012-13, the U.S.D.A. reported, with output of soft red winter wheat in the latest year at 542.15 million bus, up 29% from 419.8 million bus in 2012-13. Harvested acreage of soft red winter wheat in 2013-14 totaled 8.731 million acres, up 25.4% from 6.965 million acres in 2012-13.

The other four types of wheat — hard red winter wheat, hard red spring wheat, white and durum — showed production declines ranging widely from a decline of 5% for white wheat to a decline of 26.5% for durum. Hard red winter wheat in 2013-14 posted a wide loss of about 21.5% of production from 2012-13.

Other wheat varieties posted less dramatic changes in production and harvested acreage, although all were lower. Hard red winter wheat production fell 21.5% in 2013-14, compared with the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Hard red spring wheat production declined 5.8% in 2013-14, compared with the previous year.
