WASHINGTON — Leaders of the House Committee on Agriculture on Jan. 4 announced the committee’s membership for the 113th Congress. With the Republicans controlling the House of Representatives, they will constitute the majority of the agriculture committee, which will have 25 Republican members and 19 Democrats.

Representative Frank Lucas of Oklahoma was reelected chairman of the agriculture committee. Mr. Lucas’s leadership team includes Representative Steve King of Iowa, who will be chairman of the subcommittee on department operations, oversight and nutrition; Representative K. Michael Conaway of Texas, who will head the subcommittee on general farm commodities and risk management; Representative Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania, who will direct the subcommittee on conservation, energy and forestry; Representative Austin Scott of Georgia, who will lead the subcommittee on horticulture, research, biotechnology, and foreign agriculture; and Representative Rick Crawford of Arkansas, who will be chairman of the subcommittee on livestock, rural development and credit.

The other Republican members of the agriculture committee were Representatives Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, Randy Neugebauer of Texas, Mike Rogers of Alabama, Bob Gibbs of Ohio, Scott Tipton of Colorado, Steve Southerland of Florida, Rick Crawford of Arkansas, Martha Roby of Alabama, Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee, Chris Gibson of New York, Vicky Hartzler of Missouri, Reid Ribble of Wisconsin, Kristi Noem of South Dakota, Dan Benishek of Michigan, Jeff Denham of California, Doug LaMalfa of California, Richard Hudson of North Carolina, Rodney Davis of Illinois, Chris Collins of New York and Ted Yoho of Florida.

Representative Collin Peterson of Minnesota will remain the committee’s ranking Democratic member.

Other Democrats on the agriculture committee included Mike McIntyre of North Carolina, David Scott of Georgia, Jim Costa of California, Tim Walz of Minnesota, Kurt Schrader of Oregon, Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Suzan DelBene of Washington, Gloria Negrete McLeod of California, Filemon Vela of Texas, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, Ann Kuster of New Hampshire, Rick Nolan of Minnesota, Pete Gallego of Texas, William Eynart of Illinois, Jan Vargas of California, Cheri Bustos of Illinois and Sean Patrick Maloney of New York.

Notable was the absence from the committee of any representatives from Kansas and North Dakota, the nation’s two largest wheat-producing states.  Representative Tim Huelskamp, whose district embraces central and western Kansas, served on the committee during the 112th Congress but was not named to the committee for the 113rd Congress.
