SAN FRANCISCO — Solazyme, Inc. has received a “no questions” letter from the Food and Drug Administration concerning the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status of the company’s high-oleic algae oil for use as an ingredient in food products under intended conditions of use, Solazyme said Feb. 25.

The oil is about 90% monounsaturated fat and less than 10% saturated fat while it has 0 grams of trans fat per serving. Solazyme’s algae oil won a 2014 Institute of Food Technologists Expo Innovation Award.

“Our algae oils offer more favorable fat profiles than olive oils and higher smoke points than canola, helping customers respond to the growing demand for great tasting and nutritious food,” said Mark Brooks, senior vice-president of South San Francisco-based Solazyme Food Ingredients.

Solazyme previously received F.D.A. “no objection” letters on the GRAS status of its AlgaVia flour and AlgaVia protein.
