WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump has nominated Scott Gottlieb, M.D., to be the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Gottlieb will now begin the process of seeking Senate confirmation.

The nominee is currently a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. He also has served as the deputy commissioner of the F.D.A. under President George W. Bush, and held other roles at the agency.

“Scott Gottlieb is an excellent choice to lead F.D.A.,” said Pamela G. Bailey, president and chief executive officer of the Grocery Manufacturers Association. “His experience as F.D.A. deputy commissioner and in other key F.D.A. positions will enable him to quickly step into this important role after his confirmation.

“His appointment will be good for American consumers, the safety of their food and the role of continuous innovation. The Grocery Manufacturers Association and its member companies are committed to working with the Trump administration and Scott Gottlieb to help assure the safety of our food supply, strong science-based nutrition policies, and the integrity and effectiveness of food labeling policies.”
