“We are thrilled to celebrate our new site’s groundbreaking today in Portage la Prairie, and to start working with our local partners on the next phases of this project,” said Jean-Marc Gilson, chief executive officer of Roquette. “This represents a major step in our development strategy in North America and in the plant protein business, and we are looking forward to offering our pea-protein products from Portage-la-Prairie, at the heart of Manitoba, to customers and consumers in America and worldwide.”

Roquette first announced plans for the new facility back in mid-January. The plant is expected to have a processing capacity of more than 120,000 tonnes per year. Roquette has said it plans to invest more than $303 million in the site.

La Madeleine-based Roquette already operates a pea protein manufacturing site in France that has processing capacity of nearly 100,000 tonnes per year.
