August nonfat dry milk down 8% from 2011

WASHINGTON — August production of edible nonfat dry milk was 105,898,000 lbs, down 30% from July and down 8% from August 2011, the U.S Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 105,648,000 lbs, down 18% from July and down 37% from August 2011. August nonfat dry milk shipments were 125,254,000 lbs, down 17% from July and down 3% from August 2011.

Output of skim milk powders was 40,337,000 lbs, up 8% from July and up 4% from August 2011.

Total dry whey production was 89,148,000 lbs, down 1% from July but up 12% from August 2011.

Production of lactose was 85,593,000 lbs, down slightly from 85,831,000 lbs in July but up 3% from August 2011. Whey protein concentrate production was 34,939,000 lbs, up 3% from July but down 1% from August 2011.

Dry buttermilk outturn was 6,787,000 lbs, down 3% from July but up 4% from August 2011.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on Aug. 31 were 37,522,000 lbs, down 21% from July and down 15% from August 2011. Total lactose stocks were 84,719,000 lbs, down 5% from July but up 25% from August 2011. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 53,711,000 lbs, down 4% from July but up 40% from August 2011. Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 7,754,000 lbs, down 31% from July and down 52% from August 2011.

Butter production in August 2012 was 129,090,000 lbs, down 3% from July and down 4% from August 2011.

Total cheese production was 884,448,000 lbs, up 1% from July and up 3% from August 2011.

Production of regular hard ice cream in August totaled 74,381,000 gallons, up 1% from July but down 6% from August 2011. Low-fat ice cream production was 40,583,000 gallons, down 3% from July and down 6% from August 2011.
