Sunland expands recall again

WASHINGTON — Sunland, Inc. is expanding its recall of products processed at its Portales, N.M., facility to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts due to Salmonella concerns.

The latest expansion of the recall includes raw and roasted products that are within current shelf life or have no stated expiration date. Specifically, the roasted and roasted/salted peanuts were distributed during the six month period prior to the recall date from April 12, 2012, through Oct. 12, 2012, and will have a best by or expiration date from Oct. 12, 2012, through April 12, 2013. The raw peanuts were distributed during the 12 months prior to the recall date from Oct. 12, 2011, to Oct. 12, 2012, and have a best by date of Oct. 12, 2012, through Oct. 12, 2013, on the packaging or a “crop year” marking on the package of 2011 or 2012.The latest recalled products include Natural Value, Sunland, The Nut Shop and Treasured Harvest branded products.

Sunland initially began a recall of peanut butter and other nut butter products on Sept. 24 due to Salmonella concerns. The initial recall was for products produced in a separate building from where raw and roasted peanuts are processed. The recall was expanded on Oct. 4 to include all products made between March 1, 2010, and Sept. 24, 2012, at its nut butter production facility.

As of Oct. 5, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified 35 cases of Salmonella infections in 19 states linked to consumption of Sunland products.
