December all-wheat price up $1.13 from previous year

WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in December was $8.33 per bu, down 13c from $8.46 in November but up $1.13 from $7.20 in December 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultural Prices report.

The average price paid for winter wheat in December was $8.24 per bu, down 14c from $8.38 in November but up $1.83 from $6.41 in December 2011. The average price paid for durum was $8.45 per bu, up 29c from $8.16 in November 2012 but down $1.85 from $10.30 in December 2011. Spring wheat other than durum also averaged $8.45 per bu, down 20c from $8.65 in November but up 20c from $8.25 in December 2011.

The average price paid for all rice was $14.80 a cwt, up 40c from $14.40 in November and up 10c from $14.70 in December 2011.

The December index of prices received by farmers for food grains was 268 compared with the 1990-92 base of 100, up 1% from 265 in November and up 13% from 237 in December 2011.

The December index of feed grains was 299, down 1% from 302 the previous month but up 19% from 252 in December 2011. The average price paid to farmers for corn was $7.01 a bu, down 1c from November but up $1.15 from $5.86 in December 2011. Farmers received an average of $12.30 a cwt for grain sorghum in December, down 10c from November but up $1.80 from $10.50 in December 2011. The average price paid for oats in December was $3.78 a bu, down 14c from $3.92 in November but up 21c from $3.57 in December 2011.

The index of December prices received for oilseeds was 261, up 4% from 252 in November and up 23% from 212 in December 2011. Farmers received an average of $14.70 a bu for soybeans in December, up 40c from $14.30 in November and up $3.20 from $11.50 in December 2011.

The December index for dairy products was 162, down 4% from 168 in November but up 7% from 151 in December 2011. The average price paid for all milk in December was $21.10 a cwt, down 90c from $22 in November but up $1.40 from $19.70 in December 2011.

The November poultry and egg index was 185, up slightly form 184 in November and up 14% from 162 in December 2011. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs in December was $1.13 a dozen, down 6c from $1.19 in November and down 9c from $1.22 in December 2011.
