WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14,638 million lbs in February, down 3% from February 2012, which contained an extra day due to leap year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for January was revised to 15,907 million lbs, up 1% from January 2012 and an increase of 6 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

February production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,722 lbs, down 58 lbs from February 2012. There were 8.5 million dairy cows on farms during the month, 13,000 head less than February 2012 but 2,000 head more than January 2013.
