WASHINGTON — The Consumer Price Index for baked foods and cereal products fell 0.1% in May — its first month-over-month decline since September 2012, when it fell 0.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The index for all food at home also was lower, falling 0.3% after rising 0.1% in April.

Of the 18 items followed by Milling & Baking News, 11 posted month-over-month declines and 7 finished higher.

The May index for Cereals and Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment was 271% of the 1982-84 average, up 0.8% from a year ago. For all food at home, the May index was 233.3, up 0.8% from May 2012.

The C.P.I. for cereals and cereal products in May was 234.1, up 0.7% from April but down 0.4% from May 2012. The index for products within this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 258.8, up 0.7% from April and up 1.7% from the previous year; breakfast cereal, 228.1, up 0.3% from the previous month but down 1% from a year ago; and rice, pasta and corn meal, 241.5, up 1.7% from April but down 0.1% from May 2012.

The price index for bakery products in May was 291.5, down 0.6% from April but up 1.7% from May 2012.

The May index for bread was 177.9, down 0.2% from April but up 2.4% from May 2012. Under this heading, the C.P.I. for white bread was 322.4, down 0.7% from April but up 2.5% from May 2012. For bread other than white, the index was 346, up 0.5% from April and up 2.7% from a year ago.

The price index for fresh biscuits, rolls and muffins in May was 171.2, down 0.5% from April but up 2.3% from May 2012. The May index for cakes, cupcakes and cookies was 267.3, down 0.9% from April but up 0.9% from May 2012. Under this segment, other price indexes included fresh cakes and cupcakes, 279.3, up 0.9% from April and up 2.3% from May 2012; and cookies, 257.3, down 2.5% from the previous month and down 0.1% from the previous year.

The C.P.I. for other bakery products in May was 265, down 0.9% from April but up 1.2% from May 2012. Under this heading, other price indexes in May included: fresh sweet rolls, coffee cakes and donuts, 290.8, down 0.1% from April but up 6.4% from May 2012; crackers and cracker products, 300.8, down 2.1% from April and down 2.1% from May 2012; and frozen and refrigerated bakery products, pies, tarts and turnovers, 274.2, up 0.3% from April and up 1.9% from the previous year.
