White and whole wheat bread prices fall in July

WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread decreased in July, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 143.4c, down 0.5c per lb from June. The decline follows a gain of 3.8c in June. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in July rose in two regions — up 3.7c in the Midwest and up 3.5c in the Northeast — and fell in two regions — down 4c in the West and down 3.5c in the South.

At 205.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 0.1c per lb from June but up 8.2c per lb from July 2012.

The national average price of family flour in July was 53c per lb, down 0.3c from June but up 1.4c from July 2012.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in July was 131.4c per lb, up 1c from June but down 5.5c from July 2012. Chocolate chip cookies were 363c per lb, down 9.1c from June and down 1c from July 2012. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 72.1c per lb, down 0.2c from June but up 4c from July 2012.
