WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread was sharply lower in June, while the price for whole wheat bread increased for the third straight month, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 133.3c, down 4.9c per lb from May and down 13.4c from June 2015. It was the lowest average price since February 2008, when it was 132.1c. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in June decreased in all four regions — down 9.8c in the Northeast, down 5.2c in the South, down 2.6c in the Midwest and down 1.1c in the West.

At 197.7c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 1.5c per lb from May and up 2c per lb from June 2015. It was the highest level for whole wheat since November 2015.

The national average price of family flour in June was 52.9c per lb, up 0.4c from May and up 1c from June 2015.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in June was 129.2c per lb, down 2.8c from May and down 6.8c from June 2015. Chocolate chip cookies were 332c per lb, down 10.3c from May but up 3.4c from June 2015. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 73.4c per lb, down 1.3c from May but up 4.3c from June 2015.
