WASHINGTON — June production of nonfat dry milk was up while production of skim milk powders was down sharply from a year ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.

Nonfat dry milk production was 145,571,000 lbs, down 3% from May but up 6% from June 2008. Output of skim milk powders was 16,796,000 lbs, down 37% from May and down 50% from the previous year.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk on June 30 were 194,206,000 lbs, up 3% from the previous month and up 41% from the previous year.

Total dry whey production was 91,972,000 lbs, down 2% from May and down 3% from June 2008. Production of lactose was 60,090,000 lbs, about even with levels in May and down 5% from June 2008. Dry buttermilk outturn was 6,224,000 lbs, up 13% from the previous month and up 19% from the previous year.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on June 30 were 48,902,000 lbs, down 23% from the previous year, including 47,160,000 lbs for human use, down 18%, and 1,742 lbs for animal use, down 70%. Total lactose stocks were 65,406,000 lbs, down 26% from a year ago. Dry buttermilk stocks were 5,458,000 lbs, down 43% from 2008.

Butter production in June was 125,469,000 lbs, down 10% from May but up 8% from June 2008.

Cheese production in June totaled 832,685,000 lbs, down 3% from May but up 2% from June 2008.

Production of regular hard ice cream in June was 89,578,000 gallons, down 3% from the previous year. Low-fat ice cream production was 42,046,000 gallons, up slightly from the previous year.
