WASHINGTON — Frozen stocks of butter, cheese, eggs, pork and turkey on Aug. 31 were greater than year-earlier levels, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest

Cold Storage report.

Total natural cheese stocks were 985,318,000 lbs, about even with levels from the previous month but up 12% from the previous year, the U.S.D.A. said. Butter stocks were 263,173,000 lbs, also about even with levels in July but up 23% from August 2008.

Total frozen egg stocks on Aug. 31 were 22,596,000 lbs, equal to levels in July and up 9% from August 2008. Stocks of egg whites were 2,935,000 lbs, down 7% from the previous month and year. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 1,309,000 lbs, up 25% from the previous month and up 3% from the previous year. Whole and mixed egg stocks came in at 9,585,000 lbs, up 7% from July and up 19% from August 2008.

Turkey stocks totaled 642,630,000 lbs, equal to July levels and up 2% from August 2008, while total chicken stocks were 642,249,000 lbs, down 6% from the previous month and down 15% from the previous year. Overall, total frozen poultry supplies were 1,290,558,000 lbs, down 3% from July and down 7% from August 2008, the U.S.D.A. said.

Total red meat supplies were 974,629,000 lbs, down 4% from July but about even with levels in August 2008. Total frozen beef stocks were 426,402,000 lbs, down 4% from the previous month and down 3% from the previous year. Frozen pork stocks totaled 517,941,000 lbs, down 4% from July but up 3% from the previous year. Frozen pork belly stocks were 49,056,000 lbs, down 19% from July but up 54% from August 2008.

Total frozen vegetable stocks were 2,138,244,000 lbs, up 17% from July and up 4% from the previous year.

Stocks of frozen french fries were 903,197,000 lbs, down 7% from July but up 2% from August 2008.

Stocks of all types of frozen fruit totaled 1,242,683,000 lbs, up 8% from July and up 10% from the previous year.

Stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate were 1,282,400,000 lbs, down 6% from the previous month and down 3% from the previous year.

Fresh apples in regular and controlled storage totaled 141,167,000 lbs, down 72% from July but up 22% from August 2008.
