WASHINGTON — The National Agricultural Statistics Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated stocks of wheat held in all positions in the United States on Sept. 1, the beginning of the second quarter of the 2009-10 crop year, at 2,215,167,000 bus, up 357,044,000 bus, or 19%, from 1,858,123,000 bus on the same date in 2008.

On-farm stocks were estimated at 840,000,000 bus, up 32% from 635,700,000 bus as the Sept. 1, 2008, farm inventory. Sept. 1 off-farm stocks were estimated at 1,375,167,000 bus, up 12% from 1,222,423,000 bus a year earlier.

The U.S.D.A. said the indicated wheat disappearance in June-August 2009 was 661 million bus, down 30% from the same span in 2008.

Durum stocks were estimated at 103,289,000 bus, up 80% from 58,799,000 bus on Sept. 1, 2008. First-quarter 2009-10 disappearance of durum was estimated at 31.9 million bus, down 4% from the year-earlier span.

Stocks of corn on Sept. 1 were estimated at 1,674,059,000 bus, up 3% from 1,624,150,000 bus a year ago. June-August 2009 disappearance was estimated at 2.59 billion bus compared with 2.4 billion bus a year earlier.

Soybean stocks on Sept 1 were estimated at 138,198,000 bus, down 33% from 205,034,000 bus a year earlier. The U.S.D.A. estimated June-August soybean disappearance at 458 million bus, down 3% from the same span in 2008.
