WASHINGTON — Wide price moves occurred in the average price paid for both white pan bread and whole wheat bread during November, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 137.3c, down 1.9c per lb from October and down 0.4c from November 2008. The decline follows a 5.2c month-over-month gain in October that was the sharpest since November 2007. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 2.1c in the Northeast and up 0.3% in the Midwest — and fell in two regions — down 4.3c in the West and down 0.9c in the South.

At 180.9c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 8.4c per lb from October and down 21c per lb from November 2008. The 8.4c-per-lb decline was the sharpest since falling 12.8c in October 2005.

The national average price of family flour in November was 45.8c per lb, down 4.2c from October and down 3.6c from November 2008. It was the sharpest month-over-month decline since the price fell 4.4c per lb in November 2000.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in November was 119.3c per lb, up 2.5c from October and up 4.6c from November 2008. Chocolate chip cookies were 316.7c per lb, down 8.6c from October but up 5.5c from November 2008.
