While two separate large-scale tree nut recalls occurred a while ago, the sting is still being felt by some executives, whose companies have stepped up their food safety efforts to try to prevent them from happening again. Because of these recalls involving E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella in agricultural products, the food industry continue to explore how to control and eliminate of pathogens in popular tree nuts grown in the United States. AIB International, Manhattan, KS, is holding a 90-minute webinar that focuses on how to ensure practices in fields and facilities can avoid pathogenic risk in final food products. The webinar is on May 20 and starts at 1 p.m. (CDT)

During the webinar, Brenda Stahl, PhD, AIB’s director of microbiology, will discuss how to minimize risk through the proper cultivation, harvesting, grading and storage steps of tree nuts, such as peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pecans. Dr. Stahl will provide applicable, corrective action guidance for the production, receiving and processing of tree nuts. She will also discuss AIB's strategy of identifying the likelihood of these hazards in your facilities and production areas, and the risk associated at each step of the manufacturing process from field to fork.

The registration deadline is May 19, and the webinar costs $129. Go to www.aibonline.org for more information and to register.
