TOPEKA, KAS. — The Independent Book Publishers Association has named “Baking with Friends” a winner in the group’s 23rd annual Benjamin Franklin Awards. The honor recognizes excellence in independent publishing.
“Baking with Friends,” written by Sharon Davis and Charlene Patton of the Home Baking Association, was a winner in the Children’s/Young Adult category.

Published in December 2010 jointly by Goops Unlimited and the H.B.A., the book was recognized for originality in interior design.

“Baking with Friends is a valuable resource providing food and ingredient literacy, encouraging families, educators and homeschoolers to use and enjoy a wide variety of foods,” the H.B.A. said. “With age-appropriate kitchen tasks, a reproducible baking certificate, measurement and substitution guides, vocabulary words and tips for baking success with children, the book invites children to learn self-sufficiency and feel at home in the kitchen.”

Ms. Davis and Ms. Patton were recognized for publishing the book at an I.B.P.A. event in New York in late May.
Entries for the Franklin awards are judged by a panel of book industry experts, including buyers at wholesale and retail levels, librarians, book critics, design experts, and independent publishing consultants.
