Regulatory summit set for Feb. 3 in Washington

WASHINGTON — Representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Grain Foods Foundation, the American Bakers Association and AIB International highlight a new regulatory summit set for Feb. 3 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington.

The event will provide key stakeholders in the industry with guidance to navigate the changing legislation and regulations for food manufacturing and marketing based on Food and Drug Administration strategic initiatives.

In the morning session, speakers include: Robert C. Post, deputy director of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, who will discuss the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans; Heather Hippsley, senior attorney, advertising division of the Federal Trade Commission, who will speak about marketing to children, enforcement and labeling; and William McConagha, health policy adviser, majority staff, Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, who will talk about menu labeling, F.D.A. funding and food safety. Additionally, Judi Adams, president of the G.F.F. and Wheat Foods Council, will take part in an open discussion.

The afternoon session will include a key note speech on food safety from Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety for the Center for Science in Public Interest. Ms. DeWaal will be followed by Dave Acheson, managing director of food and import safety at Leavitt Partners, who will discuss the food safety modernization act, and Elizabeth Yetley, a retired senior nutrition research scientist with the National Institute of Health. Ms. Yetley is a member of the Institute of Medicine, Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake Committee.

Later on in the afternoon, Kathy Gombas of the F.D.A. will present on the Reportable Food Registry, while Lee Sanders, senior vice-president of government relations and public affairs at the A.B.A., and Maureen Olewnik, vice-president of audit and technical services at AIB International, will lead an open discussion.
