Combining the prebiotic Beneo Synergy 1, an oligofructose-enriched inulin, with the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12 (BB12) favorably altered through symbiotic intervention several colorectal cancer biomarkers, according to the results of a study that appeared in the February issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 37 colon cancer patients and 43 polypectomized patients. Synbiotic intervention resulted in significant changes in fecal flora as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus increased while Clostridium perfringens decreased.
